Malin Kundang

Once upon a time, in West Sumatera beach, there lived a woman and her son. His name is Malin Kundang. Malin’s father was already passed away, so Malin and her mother had to work hard for their life. Malin Kundang was a healthy, diligent and strong boy. He usually went to the sea to catch fish and then he sold it in the town.

One day, when Malin Kundang was sailing, he saw a merchant’s ship which was being raided by a band of pirates. With his brave, he saved the merchant and defeated the pirates. The merchant was so happy and asked Malin to join him and Malin agreed his offer. A few years later, Malin Kundang became rich with a huge ship, loads of trading goods, many ship crews and a beautiful wife.

One day in his journey, his ship landed on a beach. The villagers recognized him and the news ran fast in the town. Malin Kundang’s mother who had waited her son for several years were so happy hearing that her beloved son came to the village. Then she ran to the beach to meet his son. Malin denied to meet that old, poor and dirty woman. She begged him for three times but Malin yelled and said that he never had a mother like the poor woman. And then he ordered his crews to set sail.

Enraged, she cursed that he would turn into a stone if he didn’t apologize. But Malin just laughed and went away from the village.

In the quiet sea, suddenly a thunderstorm came. His big ship was wrecked and it was too late for Malin Kundang to apologize. He was thrown by the wave out of his ship, fell on a small island, and suddenly turned into a stone.

coda or moral value: we must respect our parents especially our mother because without her love, maybe we can't enjoy our life as we are now enjoy our life.
